Lawyer Duties & Salary in Canada

In Canada, lawyers are legal professionals who provide legal advice and representation to clients in a wide range of legal matters. They play a crucial role in the justice system, ensuring the rights and interests of individuals, businesses, and organizations are protected. Lawyers in Canada can specialize in various areas, such as criminal law, corporate law, immigration law, or intellectual property law.

A fascinating fact about the legal profession in Canada is that it operates under a dual legal system. The country follows both common law, derived from English law, and civil law, which is based on the legal traditions of France and other European countries. This distinction is most prominent in the province of Quebec, where civil law predominates.

The main duties of lawyers in Canada include providing legal advice, drafting legal documents, representing clients in court proceedings, and negotiating settlements. They conduct legal research, participate in client meetings, and ensure compliance with legal regulations and ethical standards.

To become a lawyer in Canada, one must typically complete a bachelor's degree in law (LL.B. or J.D.) and then obtain a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from a recognized law school. After graduation, aspiring lawyers must pass the provincial bar exam and complete a period of articling, which is a practical training program under the supervision of an experienced lawyer.

Work opportunities for lawyers exist in major cities across Canada, including Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary. Law firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies, and public interest organizations offer employment prospects. Additionally, some lawyers establish their own private practices to serve local communities.

The expected salary range for lawyers in Canada varies based on experience and location. Junior lawyers typically earn between CAD 60,000 and CAD 90,000 per year, while senior lawyers with extensive experience can earn salaries exceeding CAD 150,000 annually. Hourly rates for legal services range from CAD 200 to CAD 600, depending on the complexity and nature of the legal matter.

* Please note that the salary figures may vary based on experience & location. Salary figures & rate ranges last updated Nov 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has money gone out immediately, before the gig work has been complete? arrow-right
Our leading payment provider will independently hold the money, for security and peace of mind for the gig worker, as well as a robust disputes policy and reducing fraud on the platform. You, the gig lister, control when the money is released after satisfactory completion of the work outlined. For more information about pay in general, see our pay section in the Help Centre
Why are we so much cheaper than competitor sites? arrow-right
We are founded and developed by gig workers of the NZ economy. We passionately care about driving down the cost of business and increasing opportunities for all. We have developed a platform we believe can do this for you. We hope by creating a marketplace combing all ways of working and advertising, along with working and designing smarter, we can reduce our costs, so we don’t have to offset them onto you. We call that empowering the win-win. For more information see our fair pricing policy.
What can and can’t be listed on the gigexchange? arrow-right
See our Terms of Service for further details.
What is the difference between a fixed price & negotiable gig? arrow-right
When you set a fixed price gig, the price is non-negotiable, so anyone applying for the gig agrees to the price set in the gig listing. Negotiable gigs have no price set on the listing, but allow the gig lister and gig workers to negotiate through the private chat portals. Once an agreement is made, the scope or works and price is updated on the gig listing and agreed to by both gig lister and worker. With a negotiable gig, you can also make a change to the scope of the gig once it is in flight. Please note, any new price is just for the additional work, not the total value of the old and new.
What if someone gives me an unfair review? arrow-right
There are two sides to every story. We allow everyone to respond once to any feedback if required. We believe an eloquent and sincere response will always help future customers to identifying the true story.
